About This Course

Managers make two of the highest-stakes decisions in any organisation—who to hire and how well someone is performing—often without a disciplined method for defining what the role actually requires. When the role exists only in a manager’s head, job adverts become copied wish lists, interviews reward whoever presents well, and performance reviews drift toward personal preference rather than evidence about the work.

This course closes that gap by asking participants to define one real role from beginning to end. Working through a running case and their own selected role, participants analyse its purpose, responsibilities and outputs; derive the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics the work requires; and express differentiating competencies as observable behaviour at defined proficiency levels.

By the conclusion, participants hold a concise, defensible role definition that can inform recruitment and performance management. Every requirement is traced to the work, tested for job-relatedness and accompanied by an honest account of the tool’s limits. The emphasis is not on collecting HR terminology, but on applying a repeatable method that supports more consistent, explainable and professionally credible people decisions.

Designed for application

Why this course is different

Most hiring advice tells managers to trust their instincts or adapt a generic template. This course teaches the disciplined middle: how to define one real role from its work, trace every requirement to evidence, and explain why each requirement belongs. Participants leave with a practical role definition they can use—and a repeatable method they can apply to the next role they must hire, develop or evaluate.

01

One real role, defined all the way through

You select a real role in the opening lesson and carry it through the entire course. The result is a defensible one-page role definition that traces the work, required capabilities, observable competencies and job-related evidence supporting every requirement.

02

A routine you can run again

Each lesson builds one part of a repeatable five-move method: anchor the role, analyse the work, derive the capabilities, name the behaviour, then assemble and validate. You leave able to apply the same disciplined routine to the next role you must define.

03

Taught with its practical limits

A role definition is a decision aid, not a mechanical verdict. The course shows how roles evolve, why copied competency lists fail and where professional judgement must remain—so the tool is used as a living, evidence-based instrument rather than a rigid rule.

Learning objectives

  • Separate a role from the person who currently holds it.
  • Analyse a role into a clear purpose, responsibilities and outputs.
  • Derive required knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics from the work.
  • Build a grounded competency framework with behavioural indicators and proficiency levels.
  • Distinguish threshold requirements from the behaviours that differentiate strong performance.
  • Produce and defend a one-page role definition checked for job-relatedness.

Practical outcomes

  • A concise one-page definition of a real organisational role.
  • A purpose, responsibility and output map grounded in the work.
  • An evidence-traced KSAO profile distinguishing essential from desirable requirements.
  • A behavioural competency framework with observable proficiency levels.
  • Job-related criteria that can inform recruitment and performance decisions.
  • A repeatable five-move method for defining future roles.

Modules at a glance

Module 01Using the Job Analysis FrameworkDuration = 1 Week

You will learn to define one real role from its work: separating the role from the person, analysing its purpose, responsibilities and outputs, deriving the required capabilities, and translating differentiating behaviour into a grounded competency framework. You will assemble the results into a defensible role definition that can support recruitment and performance decisions.

Principal themes

  • Role purpose, responsibilities and outputs
  • Job analysis and work-based evidence
  • Knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics
  • Behavioural competencies and proficiency levels
  • Threshold and differentiating performance requirements
  • Job-relatedness and defensible people decisions

Intended outcomes

You will learn to analyse a role from its work, trace every required capability to a task or output, and express strong performance through observable competencies. You will then learn to assemble these elements into a concise, defensible role definition that can inform fairer recruitment and more credible performance management.
