An Unique Approach To Leadership Scholarship
The Dual Professional PhD / Doctor of Applied Leadership program represents an unique approach to leadership scholarship. Based on the same design as the PhD/DBA combined program it is specifically formulated to address the requirement of achieving the highest level of integration between the theoretical aspects of a PhD program and the applied nature of the DOAL program. The program is meant for top consultants, practicing managers or academics who wish to ensure a well-rounded and holistic understanding of the nexus of leadership theory and practice. As an integrated program emphasis is placed on the ability of the Candidate to merge and synthesize theory with real world application to push the scholarship in both an academic and applied focus.
Theory & Praxis Integration
The Dual Degree program is designed around the completion of core competencies of the DOAL program along with the completion of the PhD dissertation. Specific modules include:
- Social Issues In Management
- Authentic Leadership
- Leadership of the Self
- Spirituality & Coaching
- Theories of Counselling
- Group Dynamics
- Critical Thinking (Link)
- Quantitative Research Methods (Link)
- Qualitative Research Methods Module (Link)

- Dissertation Part A Preparation & Completion (Chapters 1, 2 & 3) (Link)
- Dissertation Part B Preparation & Completion (Chapters 4, 5 & 6) (Link)

The completion of the PhD dissertation also includes the additional requirement, beyond that of theoretical scholarship, to demonstrate the integration to a real world leadership issues where the theoretical domain synthesizes with the practical aspects of management practice.
Often, in leadership studies a student must choose between an applied orientation or a theoretical one. Students following the theoretical approach can often lack the hands-on understanding of leadership as their academic training may not have a sufficient component of reflective personal or in-group exercises. Conversely, students following an applied approach may lack a deeper understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of leadership and counselling theory. The Dual PhD / DOAL program responds to this need by combining the applied aspect of the DOAL program with the academic rigor of the PhD program. As a result, graduates are very well-rounded and able to move between praxis and theory in all settings whether it be academic or professional. This combined knowledge provides a competitive advantage to the graduate when in the marketplace.
