Course Description

This module addresses critical thinking skills as a foundation for clarity and structure in academic writing. The course aims to teach these skills through the method of argument mapping using Rationale software. Expertise can only be developed by targeting component skills and practicing them until they are mastered. Argument maps are a great tool for such deliberate practice of critical thinking skills, because they make the quality of the reasoning explicit through visual representation of its components (in boxes in a tree-like structure) and their role (through relational links, symbols and color coding).
By the end of the course, the student will have the tools to: 1. Order and present information with clarity by grouping and ordering of ideas
; 2. Support a claim by presenting other claims, sources of information and refuting objections;
 3. Structure, refine and present reasoning with clarity and rigor;
 4. Identify and analyze the logical structure of arguments by recognizing implicit premises, identifying inference objections and changing inference objections into premise objections; 5. Evaluate the strength of a line of reasoning by assessing the solidity of bases, assessing the truth of claims and premises, and recognizing types of arguments and fallacies;
 6. Deliberate whether to believe claims by means of obtaining further knowledge, practicing rational inquiry / advocacy, recognizing and compensating for cognitive biases.
