Dr. Norman Madarasz holds the position of Professor of Philosophy & Applied Ethics at Monarch Business School Switzerland. He is currently a Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul State Brazil, pursuing research in ontology and political thought. Professor Madarasz is an international specialist on twentieth century French philosophy, especially of the transdisciplinary thought of Alain Badiou, Michel Foucault, Gilles Deleuze and Maurice Merleau-Ponty. He has edited and translated Alain Badiou’s Manifesto for Philosophy, New York State University Press, 1999, and Alain Badiou’s Briefings on Existence, with the same publisher in 2006. He has published over forty essays and book chapters in peer-reviewed academic journals and publications over a broad range of questions related to ethics, politics, history, religion, language and logic. He has been an invited speaker at some of Brazil’s leading universities, and co-founded the Brazilian “Research Nucleus” on contemporary French philosophy.

After graduating in the Pure and Applied Sciences at Marianopolis College in Montreal, Canada, Professor Madarasz studied philosophy as an undergraduate at McGill University, where he graduated with honors in 1986. Interested in studying with the masters of continental philosophy, he went on to his graduate work at the Université de Paris 8 and Collège international de philosophie, where he was awarded the French Maîtrise, Diplôme d’études approfondies and Doctorat. The latter two were under the supervision of Alain Badiou, one of France’s most celebrated philosophers. After a sessional contract in Paris, Professor Madarasz was granted a foreign visiting scholar fellowship (“Bolsa Capes-PVE”) by the Brazilian Federal Government to be lecturer and researcher at Universidade Gama Filho for two years. In 2007, he became a full-time professor at the same university, as well as a lecturer in the Law School of the Universidade Estadual do Rio de Janeiro (UERJ). From 2010 and 2012, Professor Madarasz chaired the Post-Graduate School in Philosophy of Gama Filho University. In 2011, he collaborated on the newly accredited Professional Master’s Degree in Accessibility with the departments of Engineering and Architecture of Gama Filho University heading the Applied Ethics sector of the program. Then, in August 2012, Professor Madarasz assumed the position of Professor of Philosophy at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul State (PUC-RS), one of Brazil’s most prestigious universities.

In addition to his academic pursuits, Professor Madarasz has worked as language and cultural consultant at several large companies in France and Brazil, such as the Paris Bourse, Alsthom, Renault, the Brazilian Electrical Grid Operator (ONS), Eletrobras and Vale. From 1999, he published op-ed and think pieces for CounterPunch, Islam on Line, Brazzil and other magazines. In December 2011, Professor Madarasz published O MÚLTIPLO SEM UM (The Multiple Without the One) the first critical introduction to the philosophy of Alain Badiou in Portuguese. He is completing work on the groundwork of ontological realism. He speaks three languages fluently, has two daughters and is a passionate lover of music.
